The History of Social Media on the Web

We all know the history of social media because we’ve seen The Social Network. Mark Zuckerberg is a genius, savage, and ultimately the father of social media, right?

Wrong.

Social media was born long before Mark Zuckerberg got dumped by his girlfriend. We could take the idea of social media all the way back to the earliest forms of civilization because it’s essentially a means of creating and sharing content socially.

I won’t bore you with ancient facts though. The most important information of social media’s history dates back to the beginning of the internet era.

So which Social Media Platform came first?

Myspace! 100% Myspace came first because that platform was “rad.”

Yeah, you’re wrong again.

The true birth of a real social media platform came from the ancient site known as SixDegrees.com. Most people have no idea what SixDegrees even is. It was founded by Andrew Weinreich with the idea that people are no more than six degrees apart from another. This led to the explosion of many different platforms.

Social Media Growth over the Years

The Boom of the 2000s.

The initial boost of the social media craze came from blogging. The desire to connect and share our lives with people from around the world was extremely enticing. This then sparked the creation of sites like FriendsterLinkedIn, and Myspace. Each platform found their own niche with the same goal: To give a user their own virtual “circle of friends.” This was new. This was exciting. This was the future.

But Myspace was the king of them all, right?

Correct!

Well somewhat. Myspace was quickly dethroned after a few years due to the powerhouse known as Facebook. Facebook truly ignited social media worldwide. Everyone knew what social media was by about 2006. Twitter and YouTube became popular around this time showing the world how specific platforms could get. By about 2009, it wasn’t a question of, “Are you on social media?” It was “Hey, you heard of this platform yet?”

The New Age of Social Media

So where has social media gone since its birth in the 2000s?

Everywhere.

Over 79% of America’s population has a social media account. 79%! Social Media has spread like wildfire which has altered the initial direction of it.

Newer platforms like TikTokInstagramPinterest, and Snapchat have such a unique function to them. Every year more and more platforms are created and designed for specific purposes. Each one is slightly different which allows users to express themselves in various ways. Social media has come a long way since the days of SixDegrees, and will continue to change and evolve as time progresses. However, there will always be one thing that will stay the same:

Connecting and sharing content with others.
