We all could use a little extra cash here and there, right? Of course we can… we all love money.

So today let's go over the best paying side hustles that anyone can do from the comfort of your own home. We're NOT talking about passive income streams NOR the best paying remote jobs.

These are NEW ideas that are revelant in 2020.

Best Paying Side Hustles Anyone Can Do

  1. Focus Groups
  2. Respondent
  3. Fiverr / Upwork
  4. HUSTLIN
  5. Uber / Lyft
  6. Rakuten
  7. Rent a Friend
  8. Airbnb Spare Rooms
  9. Taskrabbit

Now in no way shape or form are these side hustles supposed to be a main income source. The goal is for you to make an additional $25,000 a year with these. That math is based on making $60/hr and you having 8 hours of extra time a week to spend on these side hustles. Not all side hustles will be paying $60/hr because some pay more and some pay less.... but it gets us close to that figure and I always use conservative numbers.

1. Focus Groups

So 1st and foremost, arguable one of my most favorite side hustles (just because I find it fun) is joining a contact list for a focus group.

Focus Groups are basically a group of people that participate in a guided discussion about a particular product or service before it’s even launched. So you basically get paid to just give your opinion on something. I usually do like 1 of these a month even though I could probably do 1 a week.

They range anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours long and you can get paid anywhere from $50 - $300 per focus group. It usually averages out to be roughly $75 an hour. And like I said it’s super fun to do these things and to see what and how other major companies are researching to make business decisions. Plus, I’ve done some pretty baller focus groups. One was with Powerade and I got to taste test some new flavors before they were released – One was with Nike and I got to check out some SICK concept shoes they had in the works.

Focus Groups are baller – Some of these are done via Skype-Like Conversations and then others you actually go to a location to do the focus group. All you have to do to get setup with these are to google: “Focus Groups Near Me” – fill out a demographic survey and then you’re added to their list and when something pops that pertains to you, you’ll get a call. It’s pretty cool! I’m setup with a few local companies in Phoenix which allows me to pick and choose which groups I actually do because if it’s on a product that I’m not interested in… I don’t want to do it just for the money – but you might! So get registered with a few local companies and you’ll be making good money asap.

2. Respondent

This is actually DOPE. It’s similar to focus groups but it’s more individual focused. So instead of participating in a group setting to give your opinion on something… it’s usually more of a 1-on-1 type of scenario on Respondent.

If you want to sign up for free then click here. But basically you fill out your demographics and then you’ll get TONS of projects that you can participate in to make some really good money. Some pay somewhat decent and some pay REALLY well. The average I’ve seen on my profile for my demographics is about $100/hr per project.

Each project is completely different. Some are just 30min conversations you have via skype or sometimes just on the phone. Some are really cool – like a company will send you a product and then you kind of write a 1 page review on it for them. And some give you a little task like to go through an app and do certain things or whatever. Each project is completely different from the last and respondent pays REALLY well. So I highly recommend you at least get signed up and then you can browse around to see what you qualify for.

3. Fiverr / Upwork

This one is one of the more popular things… I think. Selling your services on sites like Fiverr.com or Upwork.com are basically freelancer websites. So whatever you’re skilled in, make a listing on those sites and set your hourly rate.

If you’re really skilled in some sought after job field, you can make really good money - about $80/hr. For example… at DirectionDesk, we actually use a really solid 3D photo designer on Upwork and he charges us $35/hr. It’s dope and I really like how things work on Upwork.. so if you have a skill – get setup.

If you’re sitting there thinking that you don’t really have an expensive set of skills – no worries you can go on Fiverr and do some wild stuff for money. People will pay for you to do anything on there. You can make videos dancing or singing for people. I mean literally search anything on there and someone is doing it for money. No excuse to not be able to sell a service on there. You might only get $5-$15 per order but you could probably do 2-3 orders per hour. So that’s definitely something you should utilize.

4. HUSTLIN

It’s simply buying things for less than what it’s worth and selling them for more than what it’s worth. Back in the day we used to only really have Craigslist. But now we have Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Offerup, LetGo, and like a a bajillion other services for buying used things that other people don’t want.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone on Craigslist and bought things I’m not even interested in, but that I know I can easily make 20-40% markup on. People are bad at making GOOD listings and also just want things gone so you can easily profit off this.

Here’s what you do. Find a niche. Whether it’s a simple as action figures or sports equipment or as intense as cars or boats. Find a niche that you know what things are valued at. Set up a search query where you’ll get notified when something matches your results. Then once someone lists a product that’s undervalued. Contact them and buy it. Then turn around and make an amazing listing to get top dollar for it.

I’ve made thousands of dollars on cars AND boats with this strategy but you can go much smaller and buy something for $50, then turn around and sell it for $95. That’s easy profit that might take you an hour to do. So don’t underestimate this side hustle. It’s pretty impressive.

5. Uber / Lyft

Ok this one is super boring and everyone already knows about it but I figured I’d throw it in here because it’s so mainstream. It’s Uber and Lyft.

Honestly not great side hustles because you really don’t make as much per hour as you think once you factor in car depreciation and gas and maintenance all the BS you have to deal with. BUT some people have Priuses and really enjoy driving and meeting new people so these could be options… but for me… honestly not worth it.

6. Rakuten

Ok number 6 is a pyramid scheme. We love pyramid schemes right? And I’m not talking about Arbonne or Vemma or ForeverGreen or Isagenix – if you do those things.. no hate you do you and kill it while you can! But what I’m talking about is Rakuten...

Formally known as Ebates but then this Japanese company bought it back in 2014 and then they finally got around to updating their profile pic and name in 2019 to Rakuten. Basically this website is pretty dope – I actually use it myself but you pretty much just shop online through their platform on major stores like Walmart, Kohls, and Underarmor and they pay you cash back like a credit card.

The rates are pretty legit. Like 5-15% cash back. Now if you’re sitting there going… Shawn that’s saving money – not necessarily making money. And I getcha – hold up. They have an affiliate type thingy-ma-jig-a-rooni in their dashboard. Where you can tell friends and family to get signed up and they’ll pay you $25 per signup. That’s pretty rare to get paid just for someone else signing up. The person who signs up does have to spend $25 on the website.

But that’s chump change. Girls walk into Sephora and spend 3 months rent on painting supplies. Don’t get me wrong… us dudes appreciate that but $25 is nothing. A simple Facebook post or Instagram post that takes you 5 minutes to do, could easily get you 20-40 signups from friends and family. That’s $500-$1,000. For literally showing other people how to save money. Do like 4 posts a year and you’re golden.

With that being said… full disclosure… my referral link is right here. So sign up with that to get a free $10 and to give me a free $25. All the proceeds I get will either go to charity or into a giveaway. So definitely in your best interest haha!

7. RentaFriend

Next up on our list in the number 7 spot is actually hilarious to me… It’s becoming a “Friend”… Yes… a Friend.

There’s literally a website called “RentAFriend.com”. Where you can literally sign up for someone to pay you to be their friend. It sounds wild and kind of sketchy but it’s LEGIT. It makes sense for people who travel solo a lot or for people who travel with a group but want advice from locals.

Plus it could be great for finding a +1 to events or bringing guests to business functions. It’s hilarious but literally this website is worldwide and it’s legit… it’s not like an escort service. So if you’re an outgoing person, get registered on there. You can charge anywhere from $20-$50 an hour for your “services”.

Still absolutely crazy that this is a thing but might as well get registered on there and see if anyone rents you!

8. Airbnb Spare Rooms

And on the topic of renting… number 8 is actually just renting a spare bedroom out on AirBnB. Very little maintenance and work is involved, but it could be incredibly profitable – especially if you live in a high foot traffic area like LA, New York, or Miami.

Easy $$$ to be made there if you’re comfortable meeting and potentially hanging out with new people constantly.

9. Taskrabbit

Then lastly on my list.. Get signed up on Taskrabbit. It’s a super cool website that is pretty much just being an extra set of hands for whatever people in your area need help with.

Things like picking up and delivering groceries for people, assembling furniture, mounting TVs, moving boxes and organizing spaces, or just anything people need help with. If you live near a retirement community… you will CRUSH IT. Each project pays differently but you can get anywhere from $20 - $130 per project and most things are ridiculously simple.

There's Your 9 Best Paying Side Hustles

Keep in mind that I tried to keep this list applicable to nearly anyone’s situation. Depending on your unique skill set, you can really get unique and creative to earn some pretty ridiculous money. Basically if you’re an expert in any field, you can make great money consulting or by creating something worth selling to help others.

Bottom line: If you want to start making money – solve a problem people have and you’ll be set.

Side hustles can be really easy money and it really doesn’t change your life a ton – Exchange a couple hours a week hustling instead of watching Netflix. I highly recommend everyone has some sort of side hustle because it can take your $50k a year salary to $75k a year which takes you to a a whole another weight class.

Either way hope you learned something new! If you did, share this blog post with a friend. I’m always releasing good stuff to make your life easier. Otherwise I’ll catch you in the next one!
